Catano

Catano was founded in 1927. It is 5.0 square miles making it the smallest municipality of Puerto Rico. Catano was a barrio of the municipality of CatanoBayamon until July 1st 1927.  It was constituted a municipality under the Act # 30 adopted on April 25th of that year.

The name is in honor of a Spanish doctor named Hernando de Catano whom provided medical services in this town in 1569, when the island of Puerto Rico was ruled by the Spanish Francisco Bahamonde and Lugo was known as the Herd the Palms.
Location: Located on the north coast of the island, along the Bay of San Juan. Toa Baja, is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean to the north, Bayamon and Guaynabo to the south, Toa Baja to the west and by the Atlantic Ocean to the east.

Nickname: “The entrance of the Capital”, “The people that refused to die” or “The boaters”.
